The City of Atlantic City will officially open the newly transformed Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver Plaza on Thursday, June 5, 2025. The plaza, located at Atlantic City Hall, honors the legacy of New Jersey’s late Lieutenant Governor with her name prominently displayed above the main entrance and on street signs throughout the space.
What was once a simple courtyard has been reimagined as a beautiful, functional community gathering place. The Lieutenant Governor often spoke of her desire to retire in Atlantic City, and now her legacy will be forever part of the city’s landscape.
The plaza incorporates enhanced safety features including improved lighting throughout the courtyard, decorative lanterns, and a newly gated entrance with protective covering over the main walkway to City Hall. Environmental features include a rain garden that manages stormwater while adding natural beauty to the space.
Community gathering spaces feature fixed benches placed throughout the courtyard, complemented by a marble fountain and an elegant pergola. The landscape design includes new trees, shrubs, and grass areas that create a welcoming green space in downtown Atlantic City, along with redesigned parking lots for improved accessibility.
The June 5th grand opening will welcome the public to experience this transformed space that honors Lieutenant Governor Oliver’s memory while serving Atlantic City residents and visitors.
