ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – (Tuesday, June 20, 2017) – At a public meeting today, the Board of the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) granted preliminary determination of project eligibility for an Entertainment-Retail District Project by the Hard Rock Atlantic City Casino and Hotel.

“The planned renovations will transform the 4.2 million square feet of defunct casino hotel space into a state-of-the-art casino, hotel, retail, dining and entertainment facility, increasing employment opportunities and strengthening Atlantic City and New Jersey’s economies,” said CRDA Board Chairman Robert Mulcahy.  “We look forward to seeing this project come to fruition.”

The Board also approved a supplemental fund reservation in an amount not to exceed $1 million to fund renovations and improvements associated with the relocation of Sister Jean’s Kitchen, which will move to the former St. Monica’s Catholic Church on North Pennsylvania Avenue.  The funds will be utilized primarily to bring the new facility up to code and to purchase and install commercial kitchen equipment.  In addition, the funds will allow for the demolition of a rear building to establish a parking and loading area, as well as minor environmental remediation.

“The relocation of Sister Jean’s Kitchen is the second phase of the Pacific Avenue Midtown Redevelopment Project, along with the relocation of the John Brooks Recovery Center already in progress,” said CRDA Executive Director Chris Howard.  “This relocation will be a significant upgrade from Sister Jean’s current facility and will provide a cleaner and safer environment for its critical services.”

About the CRDA:

The only agency of its kind nationwide, the CRDA has used Atlantic City casino reinvestments as a catalyst for meaningful, positive improvement in the lives of New Jersey residents since 1984.  Under the 2011 Tourism District Act, the Authority’s mission evolved from statewide projects to becoming the state’s key economic development agency for Atlantic City.  CRDA’s expanded responsibilities now include land use regulation, tourism marketing and clean and safe initiatives. The CRDA also oversees Historic Boardwalk Hall (the leading entertainment venue of its size in the country) and the Atlantic City Convention Center.  In total, CRDA has invested nearly $2 billion in more than 400 projects statewide, of which $1.8 billion has been invested in Atlantic City, spurring business investments and expansions, and creating permanent jobs in the process.
