ATLANTIC CITY, NJ, September 4, 2013 – After a silence that spanned more than four decades, the world’s most powerful musical instrument – a pipe organ that contains both the largest and loudest organ pipes ever made – is ready to once again echo throughout Atlantic City’s historic Boardwalk Hall (www.boardwalkhall.com). The majestic instrument will be reintroduced to the community during another homecoming for Atlantic City, when the destination hosts the 2014 Miss America Competition for the first time since 2005. The preliminary events will take place on September 10,11 and 12, with the final night of crowning scheduled for Sunday, September 15 live on ABC at 9 p.m. ET.
The organ has only recently begun playing again thanks to the completion of the first part of an ambitious restoration project. The Historic Organs Restoration Committee (HORC), an organization that was established in New Jersey as a non-profit company to oversee the funding and restoration of the pipe organs in Boardwalk Hall, has been leading the refurbishment.
“It is very fitting that the return of Miss America to its original home in Atlantic City will correspond with the rebirth of another vital symbol of the destination,” said Sharon Pearce, president for the Miss America Organization. “We couldn’t be more excited to have this majestic piece of history become part of the celebration!”
The instrument was originally built between 1929 and 1932 by the Midmer-Losh Organ Company of Merrick, N.Y. Producing more sound than a dozen orchestras, the pipe organ can both whisper and thunder into the 5.5 million cubic feet of air space in the main hall.
Steven Ball, one of the world’s most renowned organists, was recently appointed by the HORC as Boardwalk Hall’s resident organist and director of outreach. Dr. Ball, a Fulbright Scholar widely recognized as a performer and improviser as well as for his work with silent film composition and accompaniment, will display his proficient musical talents when he performs on the organ.
