GRAND OPENING SET FOR COMMUNITY HARVESTERS CHURCH
COMMUNITY GARDENING GREENHOUSE
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – (Wednesday, May 7, 2014) – As part of a local urban agriculture initiative, the Community Harvesters Church, located at 204 North New York Avenue, will host a grand opening ceremony on Saturday, May 10, 12 pm for its new community gardening greenhouse.
“A community garden helps promote a healthy community and they provide food for many individuals in need,” said CRDA Community Development Partnerships Director Ali Reynolds. “This garden may also strengthen the bond that many feel throughout the community while creating recreational and therapeutic opportunities.”
The CommunityHarvestersChurch received $50,000 in grant funding from the CRDA to assist with the purchase and installation of the new greenhouse along with a storage shed, rainwater barrel, fencing, bench, trash can and various gardening accoutrements. All of produce grown at the community garden is meant to be donated and distributed to needy Atlantic City residents.
“Thanks to the generous contributions from the CRDA, CommunityHarvestersChurch was able to construct a Community Gardening Greenhouse that will enable us to grown fresh vegetables and herbs year round,” said Pastor Alexander Smith. “We endeavor to educate our community, in particular our youth, on the importance of urban agriculture and we hope to create jobs and market what we grow to local businesses to sustain our greenhouse.”
A rain date is scheduled for Saturday, May 24, 12 pm. For more information, please call 609-340-8061.
