(Atlantic City, NJ, July 8, 2015) – Poetry readings will add a touch of culture to the Atlantic City Farmers Market as some well-credentialed local writers offer to read their works during the musical intermission at the weekly event.
Sponsored by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), the Thursday Farmers Market in Center City Park (Atlantic Avenue between North Carolina and South Carolina Avenues), now in its fifteenth year, has become a gathering place for visitors, residents and office workers who spend their lunch time perusing regionally grown fresh produce and enjoying music by local musicians.
This year, thanks to Galloway Township poet and playwright Joel Ollander and Aubrey Gerhardt, director of the Otto Bruyns Public Library of Northfield and founder of SJPoets, a group of area poets will also feed guests’ spirits by providing 15-minute poetry readings in between music sets. Ollander brought the idea to Gerhardt when he read about CRDA’s desire to add poetry to the mix, and Gerhardt very quickly enlisted the poets.
The poets are all accomplished and well recognized in their field, having received numerous awards and accolades (see the attached schedule and biographies), and have all volunteered to provide their talents at no charge.
“We’re looking forward to adding another layer of entertainment and culture to the Farmers Market,” said CRDA Executive Director John Palmieri. “In addition to offering fresh farm goods, this CRDA project offers a break from the usual and enhances the many cultural offerings you can find in Atlantic City.”
Ali Reynolds, CRDA’s Director of Community Development Partnerships, added a special thanks to Ollander, Gerhardt and State Senator Christopher J. Connors, who helped Ollander bring the offer of free talent to the CRDA. “This is a perfect fit for the Farmers Market and will be an excellent addition as it continues to evolve into a bigger experience for our guests,” she said.
The Farmers Market is open Thursdays and Saturdays from July 9 through September 26, 9 am – 3 pm, weather permitting. Music in the Park is offered in Center City Park on Thursdays from 12-2 pm through September 24. Poetry readings will be held on Thursdays through September 24 and begin at approximately 1 p.m.
